2023 One Truckee River Survey – The Results Are In!
For the third consecutive year, One Truckee River surveyed our Northern Nevada community about how residents have been using the Truckee River, their knowledge of it, and areas they’d like to see improved. These surveys are important, both for the general feedback we receive and for the baseline data we’re collecting, which is starting to show year-over-year trends.
In short - our Survey participants appreciate the Truckee River! 94% say the Truckee is very important to them and 89% spend time in parks along the river. They shared which parks they’re spending the most time in, and what steps they’re already taking to limit non-point source pollution to the river and watershed.
Here are some of our findings from 2023:
Survey participants love the Truckee River. 94% say the Truckee is very important to them and 89% spend time in parks along the river.
They want to protect it. Protecting the Truckee is important to our community. 98% say the community needs to do more to address the health and safety of the river, 89% say the community needs to do more to address safety along the river, 89% are concerned about the water’s health, and 93% want to see more resources allocated to managing the Truckee River corridor.
These participants have been enjoying the Truckee River for longer than past year’s participants. 81% of them have been recreating along the Truckee for 5+ years, compared to 74% in 2022 and 68% in 2021.
They’re visiting the river more frequently than before. 23% recreate along the river “one or more times a week” and 36% “one or more times a month”
The biggest increases in park popularity can be seen in Crystal Peak Park and Mayberry Park, both west of downtown Reno.
Most of 2023’s survey participants are taking the following steps to limit non-point source pollution to the Truckee River and the overall Truckee Meadows Watershed:
Always dispose of hazardous materials, such as oil, antifreeze, or batteries, at a proper collection site (96%)
Make sure your car doesn’t leak oil (89%)
Wash your car at a car wash (86%)
Design and maintain your yard with non-point pollution in mind such as following fertilizers instructions, fixing irrigation leaks, and installing water-wise plants (82%)
Pick up dog poop and dispose of it in a trash can (79%)
