Past Work

From 2013 to 2016, the OTR partnership, through the leadership of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and Nevada Land Trust with support from Truckee River Fund, was founded as a collaboration of public and private partners focused on working together to help protect the Truckee River. The OTR Management Plan was developed collaboratively with many agencies and unanimously adopted by Washoe County, City of Reno, and the City of Sparks in 2016.

From 2016 to 2018, One Truckee River operated under the Nevada Land Trust, our former fiscal agent. Since then, we’ve focused on nine priority action items from the OTR Management Plan.  In the earliest years of collaboration, our accomplishments included the following listed below led by Nevada Land Trust, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, and the AmeriCorps hosted by Truckee Meadows Park Foundation with funding from the Nevada Division of Environmental Projection, Renown Health, Truckee River Fund and Washoe County and One Truckee River watershed coalition efforts.

Mapping

Working with our partners, we developed baseline maps of recreation sites and amenities along the Truckee River, including the above Source Water and Watershed Protection Map. These maps highlight bathrooms and bike trails, as well as tributaries and critical source water protection areas, and are the reference point for everything we do. We’ve also coordinated with ArTrails on the Washoe County street art map.

Community Knowledge Survey

We created our first survey in 2017, to determine our community’s knowledge levels around the Truckee River, river-friendly actions already being taken, and watershed challenges they were most concerned about. Today, we survey annually – with our 2022 and 2021 results available on our website.

Watershed Education Plan

In order to build an aware and engaged community that protects and cares for the Truckee River Watershed, One Truckee River created a comprehensive watershed education plan. Our plan focused on building a sense of connectedness to our home environment and mindfulness of individual actions we can take.

Educator Resource Guide

Our Educator Guide highlighted outside organizations and opportunities to familiarize students with their home, the Truckee River Watershed. It provided teachers with lesson plans about identifying where we live in the Watershed -  and why it matters -  tailored to fit each grade’s NGSS standards

Teacher Guide

One Truckee River produced an online guide to the plants and wildlife of the Truckee River, including a citizen science project aimed at documenting the presence and location of species that are present in and along the river throughout the year. We worked with Truckee River Guide and local photographers to create this resource.

Mile Markers on the trail along the Truckee River

To aid in navigation, recreation, and rescue, we added Mile Marker signage along the Truckee River. These signs appear every 1/10th miles from Mayberry Park to Fisherman’s Park.

NV AB379

One Truckee River helped pass a state bill to authorize city and county governments to create parks, trails, and open space districts. There are over 1000 such districts nationwide, including the nearby Truckee-Donner Recreation and Park District. Currently work to accomplish a service plan that will help the region explore establishing and funding a park district in the Truckee Meadows region is underway.

Truckee River Month

We launched Truckee River Month, held each May. To celebrate Truckee River Month, in the past we have planned and promoted workshops and events with our partner organizations, including photo and writing contests. Up to 13,000 people have participated. Now, we encourage our Northern Nevada community to spend time appreciating our local river corridor and highlight key river events in the month of May.

Local Coordination

Partnering with local organizations – from government entities to nonprofits – has always been at the heart of everything we do. By working together and improving communication, we can amplify all of our efforts, limit duplication, and coordinate towards our shared goal for a healthy, thriving Truckee River for our community to enjoy.
