State of the Riverbank

Saturday, June 27th   10am-12pm – Caughlin Park

Saturday, August 29th   10am-12pm – Idlewild Park

Saturday, September 19th   10am-12pm – Broadhead Park

Join Iris Jehle-Peppard, One Truckee River’s Executive Director, for a walk along the Truckee River Path. Together, we’ll observe and document the state of the river while learning about regional coordinated vegetation management efforts.

As we stroll along the Truckee, we’ll note the plant species we find – and talk about why they matter so much for wildlife, residents, and visitors. We’ll share an update on One Truckee River's riverbank repair projects along each of these key stretches of the waterway, as it flows through the heart of our community. As we explore, we’ll discover more about local efforts to improve the Truckee River Corridor.

Discovering the Native Plants of Lake Park

Saturday, July 25th   9am-11AM – Lake Park

Nevada is home to 2,800+ types of native plants. Learn how to spot them – and why they’re important to our local environment – on a FREE docent-led walk! Lake Park has always been home to many native species, including trees, grasses, riparian plants, and flowers. Since April 2024, our coalition of partners has helped reintroduce many native plants to Lake Park, and we’re excited to share with you how they’ve been thriving.

On this native plant walk, Emma Wynn and Hannah Bishop-Moser from the Nevada Native Plant Society will guide you through Lake Park. We’ll talk about how to identify native plants, the benefits they have for the plants, animals, and peoples who call our high desert ecosystem home.

Riverside Poetry Walk

Saturday, August 1st 10AM-12PM - Broadhead Park

Nature has inspired poets for as long as humans have sung, spoken, and written – and few places are as inspiring as the banks of the Truckee River. Take a stroll with a local writer as they guide us through the process of writing our own poetry.

Our guided Poetry Walk begins at Brodhead Memorial Park. While we stroll along the river, we’ll notice the water, flora, and fauna. Bring a notebook and pencil – and come join us in this most human of art forms!

Bird & Bug Blitz

SUNday, SEPTEMBER 27th 9AM-11PM - Lake Park

Discover nature that can be found right in our backyards – including common birds, creepy crawly bugs, butterflies, and more! We’ll begin our Lake Park exploration with a short discussion about the creatures we’re likely to find, and why they matter.

Then, we’ll walk (and poke) around the lake to see what we can find. Mallard ducks, American robin, American goldfinch, and a colorful variety of spiders, bees, and butterflies can often be found in Lake Park. With milkweed flowers in bloom, we’ll keep watch for monarch butterflies.

Bring your notebooks and pencils to track what you see and experience, as well as a hat, sunscreen, and binoculars if you have them. Binoculars for loan will be provided.

This event is perfect for wildlife lovers and adventurers of all ages!
