Goals & Priorities

One Truckee River works to ensure a healthy, thriving, sustainable river connected to the hearts and minds of its community.

From 2013 to 2016, the OTR partnership came together through the leadership of Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful and the Nevada Land Trust with support from the Truckee River Fund and developed One Truckee River (OTR) and the OTR Management Plan. In 2016, the OTR Plan was unanimously adopted by Washoe County, City of Reno, City of Sparks, and Western Regional Water Commission. The OTR Plan includes 103 action items for protecting the Truckee River. At the end of 2017, the OTR Partnership Council selected nine priority action items  from  the OTR Management Plan to have the OTR watershed coalition focus on. 

At the core, One Truckee River is working towards 4 organizational goals. Within these four goals there are many action items and objectives to take. Currently, OTR has completed and continues to work on the nine high-priority action items under OTR’s main goals, listed below.

9 Priority Action Items

1) Identify location of all high-volume storm drains and the largest storm water contributions to the Truckee River. (1.1.A) (In Progress)

2) Develop Truckee River Watershed Management Plan through stakeholder coordination and consensus process. (1.2.A) (Completed)

3) Ensure adequate public restrooms along the Truckee River. Initiate a pilot study of temporary restroom facilities in priority areas along the river corridor. (1.3.C)  (Completed)

4) Develop and implement a coordinated vegetation management plan along the river.  (1.4.C) (In Progress)

5) Enhance Truckee River visitor safety, access, public facilities (bathrooms) and education. (2.1.E) (In Progress)

6) Complete a multi-jurisdictional signage plan including standards for maps, directions, rules, stewardship and interpretive signs. (2.2.B) (Completed)

7) Expand the continuum of housing options, including a permanent overflow shelter, transitional housing, and access to permanent, supportive housing, including the wrap around services needed to support residents. (2.6.A) (In Progress)

8) Assess existing groups and structures for possible entities to house the management of the OTR Plan and develop recommendations. (4.1.A) (Completed)

9) Create metrics for measuring success and achievements of the plan. (4.2.B) (In Progress)
