    Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation in cooperation with Reno Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the Sanford Center for Aging’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, are offering a series of interpretive walks specifically for individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

    The Idlewild Health Walks will give citizens living with dementia the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy Idlewild Park.

    The Idlewild Health Walks will provide individuals living with dementia a fun and educational way to explore one of Reno’s premiere urban parks while receiving the physical and mental health benefits of spending time outdoors. These one-mile and one-hour walks will give participants an opportunity to learn about the natural world through an experiential exploration of seasonal change along the Truckee River in Idlewild Park.

    The walks will begin at 10 a.m. at the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation office (50 Cowan Drive) in Idlewild Park, located directly across the street from the California Building. The walks are being held every other Tuesday from May 31st through Jan. 24.

    These guided walks are designed to include individuals living with dementia and their care partners to participate together, providing opportunities for social interaction, exercise, and collaboration with others in similar situations.

    The River Talk is a one hour virtual tour of a few of the Truckee River Watershed Council’s projects throughout the watershed. Guests hear how land use practices dating back to Westward Expansion have damaged the Truckee River watershed and what the Truckee River Watershed Council is doing to restore streams, creeks, meadows and the main stem of the Truckee River. Guests are not asked to make a financial contribution.
